This work depicts Mulan, a revered Chinese heroine whose story was first told in the fifth century. As a young woman, she dressed as a man and joined the army, taking her father’s place because she had no elder brother to fulfill the role. After years of military campaigns and service to her country, she returned with honor and gifts from the emperor, and revealed to her shocked compatriots that she was a woman all along.

Joan of Arc
This work depicts Joan Of Arc, a peasant girl who lived in medieval France during the Hundred Years War with England. Her belief that she could hear voices from God took her to the court of the French king and to the forefront of the battlefield, where she inspired victory. Aged 19, she was captured by the English, and burnt at the stake when she refused to renounce her beliefs. Later she was canonized, and the English were driven out of France.

Anne Boleyn
This work depicts Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s second wife, portrayed variously throughout history as a tragic heroine, wicked woman or feminist icon. Emmeline Pankhurst
This work depicts Emmeline Pankhurst, the leading British women’s rights activist, who led the movement to win the right for women to vote. She helped found the Women’s Social and Political Union that gained notoriety for its activities and whose members were the first to be called ‘suffragettes’. In her fight for a vote, was arrested on numerous occasions and went on hunger strike herself, resulting in violent force-feeding. Women were granted equal voting rights with men shortly after her death in 1928.
